Executive design, safety coordination during design and execution phase of the “Redevelopment of the Multisector Taranto’s Pier Quay Deck Extension.”

The activity regards structural improvements along the existing Quay of Taranto’s Mulisector Pier with the aim to  safeguard the stability of the existing bin type structure while deepening the seabed in accordance with the new Port of Taranto Master Plan (platform deck on foundation piles); achieve the access ways to be able to use the latest generation quayside cranes; with the aim of making the berths available for the docking of all new generation ships.

The extension of the quay, which is located near by the existing one, takes the form of the construction of a double row of poles for an extension of 1200 m, to support a deck that would involve the translation of the current crane runways of about 10 m towards the sea. The project also involved the dredging of the seabed in front of the quay for an extension of about 20 m.

The planned interventions can be summarized as follows:

  • Dredging of the 2m strip in front of the existing quay for deepening of the seabed up to -16.50 m a.s.l.;
  • Construction of a pile deck overlooking the line of caissons in situ;
  • Updating and upgrading of existing plant networks: MV electricity, quay drainage.

The design choices adopted, in agreement with the Client, have been carefully developed in order to make the completed intervention perfectly congruent with the existing neighboring structures and compatible with the overall layout of the port area in which it is inserted.
